Gervonta Davis makes his lightweight debut against cagey veteran Yuriokis Gamboa on Saturday, December 28, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
Both men will be going at it in a 12-round contest on a night where the vacant WBA (Regular) lightweight title will be on the line. Not a bad incentive for both guys, it must be said.
The odds on Davis (22-0 21 KOs) beating Gamboa (30-2 18 KOs) show that the bookies are making him a huge favorite for this contest. Tank, at 25, is the younger fighter by a whopping 12 years, and it is expected that this will play a part in the fight.
Gamboa is a former featherweight titlist who also unsuccessfully challenged Terence Crawford for the WBO lightweight title in 2014.
Davis is the former IBF and WBA (Super) super featherweight champion with a big reputation.
This fight promises to be the biggest test of Davis’ career to date. Will he get the win and move closer to a potential fight of the year candidate against Vasyl Lomachenko? Or will Gamboa prove to be Tank’s abatis?
Today, I’m going to break down the Davis vs. Gamboa fight to help you boxing betting fans get the right bets on the night. Firstly, let’s see how the odds look for this lightweight title clash.
The odds below come courtesy of Betway, but keep in mind that they are subject to change.
As mentioned earlier, Davis heads into this fight as a huge favorite over Gamboa.
If you are betting on Davis to beat Gamboa on the moneyline, the odds will be pretty short at +1200. The youngster has been billed as the next big thing in boxing for a few years now and will be expected to register a big performance against the Cuban.
Those who fancy a bet on Gamboa to beat Davis will be rewarded with odds of +600 if he can get the job done. He is clearly given little chance by bookmakers in this fight, but he is far from a bum.
So, what can we expect from this end-of-year scrap? Will the fight go the distance, or will Tank’s power be enough to get the job done early?
Could Gamboa shock the boxing community and down one of its brightest young stars?

In terms of size, both guys are pretty evenly matched.
Gamboa is the same height as Davis but gives up two inches in reach to the southpaw.
Despite being twelve years older than his opponent, Gamboa has only had ten more professional bouts than Davis. At 37, he is approaching the end of his career, and it is expected that Davis will be able to take advantage of his declining skills.
For fans unaware of the Cuban’s resume in the sport, allow me to introduce Yuriokis Gamboa.
As I said above, this guy is no bum.
In fact, Yuriokis Gamboa is going to give Gervonta Davis the biggest test he has ever had in the paid ranks.
Since losing against Robinson Castellanos in May 2017, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist has put himself back on the map with victories over Roman Martinez, Jason Sosa, Miguel Beltran Jr., and Alexis Reyes.
Although in the twilight years of his career, a win over Davis would be huge. Aside from getting his hands on theWBA (Regular) lightweight strap, he could leapfrog Davis and land another money-spinning scrap with Lomachenko.
Or, if not the Ukrainian, the WBC lightweight titlist Devin Haney.
While the odds are stacked against him, Gamboa will ask serious questions of Davis. Tank has never fought a boxer of this caliber before and will need to be as sharp as a blade to win.
Gamboa might not have as much power as Davis, but he sure has a better resume. He has only ever lost by knockout once, at that came against Terence Crawford, a guy that some believe to be the best fighter on the planet.
That said, Gamboa has been on his back a lot.
Still, make no mistake, Gamboa is going to throw everything at Tank on the night. He will be very confident of winning, and at odds of +600, there is every reason to believe that there is value to be had in backing him.
Gamboa has proven, once again, that he is not afraid to fight the best. For Davis, this will be the best fighter he has ever fought. Make of that what you will.

The hard-hitting native of Baltimore has had his career managed pretty well to date and is now beginning to be let loose on a higher caliber of opponent.

So, it was good to see the 25-year-old being matched up against Gamboa. Sure, this isn’t the same version of Gamboa that looked sublime over a decade ago, but maybe that’s why Davis has taken this fight.
Anyone with even the remotest knowledge of modern boxing politics will understand that fighters like Davis have their careers carefully managed. There is true, elite quality in the lightweight division, and Tank needs to prove he can handle a fast, smart veteran before he is allowed to go any further.
With the bookmakers confident that he will have too much for Gamboa on the night, some are treating this fight as a formality for the Mayweather Promotions star.
While Davis certainly has the talent to make a big impression on the night, I’m not super confident that it will be as easy as some think.
However, if he can connect cleanly on Gamboa, the Cuban could suffer the second knockout loss of his career.
The betting odds on Davis beating Gamboa aren’t great. So, if you think he will win but are not keen on betting the moneyline, it could be worth looking for props closer to fight night.
Tank’s odds of beating Gamboa are currently -1200, which means that you will need to put down $1200 for every $100 you win.
Gamboa’s odds of +600, however, are interesting. While it would be a shock if he lost, I think he is more dangerous than the price suggests.
In terms of predictions, I think this fight will be a tight contest in the early stages. In fact, I can see Gamboa’s speed and nous being a big problem for Davis. The Cuban tends to start fights really well.
At times, we have seen Davis sluggish in the first few rounds, but if his last three bouts are anything to go by, this fight could be over before the third. Tank stopped the outmatched Ricardo Núñez in two rounds in July and knocked out Hugo Ruiz in the first in February. Prior to that fight, he stopped Jesús Cuellar in three in April 2018.
I think a lot of gamblers will be going for a Davis stoppage in the first half of the fight. If Davis is sharp and feeling good at 135, I don’t see why he can’t approach this fight looking for the knockout.
Davis, at 25, is probably a few years off his prime. Gamboa is 37 and is unlikely to have more than a handful of fights left in the tank, pardon the pun. So, with all of the above, you have to give Davis the nod here.
Gamboa can cause Davis big problems with his speed. But there are questions over his ability to deal with both the younger man’s power and stay busy for the entire 12 rounds.
As much as I think Gamboa has a bigger shot than the bookmakers believe — and would be tempted to back him at odds of +600 — I wouldn’t be putting a lot of money on him to shock the world.

Final Thoughts
Gervonta Davis can become a two-weight world champion with a win over Cuba’s Yuriokis Gamboa on December 28.
A heavy betting favorite, Davis must find a way to deal with what the veteran has to throw his way, which could make for a more intriguing fight than some might think.
